Campus Visit Recap | 2026 GE Spring FAM Trip Stop 2: Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School, Georgia

Deep within the Appalachian Mountains of the southeastern United States lies an extraordinary institution — Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School (RAGS). Set on a breathtaking 1,400-acre mountain campus in northeastern Georgia, this college-prep boarding school founded in 1903 is widely celebrated for its highly diverse international community, exceptional arts programs, and the one-of-a-kind circus arts curriculum unique across the entire United States. Our team recently completed an immersive campus visit here, bringing back heartfelt insights and valuable takeaways.

A Heartfelt Welcome, Home Away From Home

Upon arrival, our GE delegation was greeted with warm, sincere hospitality. School President Mr. Jeff Miles, alongside multiple faculty members, welcomed our group at the entrance with handshakes and friendly conversation. His calm, approachable demeanor instantly reflected the school’s distinctive welcoming culture.

Since taking office as the 11th President of Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School in 2019, Mr. Jeff Miles has led the largest fundraising campaign in the school’s history and driven steady enrollment growth to record highs. Under his leadership, the school has reached new developmental heights and was ranked #1 Boarding School in Georgia by Niche in 2025.

After brief introductions, the school thoughtfully divided our team into four tour groups based on native languages, guided by current students fluent in Spanish, Vietnamese, English, and Mandarin respectively. This thoughtful arrangement allowed every visitor to explore the campus in their most comfortable linguistic environment. It vividly proves that cultural diversity is never just a slogan at RAGS, but lived out through genuine, thoughtful details.

Leo’s Story: A Shanghai Student’s Growth Journey

Our Mandarin-speaking tour guide was Leo, a 12th-grade student from Shanghai. He first enrolled at Rabun Gap in 9th grade and has spent four transformative years on campus.

Leo shared his unique student experience with us. During his first two years, he lived in campus dorms and fully embraced traditional boarding life. Starting in his junior year, he transitioned to day student status after his family relocated nearby. Notably, his younger brother also attends RAGS, a clear testament to this family’s deep trust and recognition of the school.

We began our tour at the Admission Building, which also houses the school library. Our route included Hodgson Hall, student life offices, the science building, student activity center, and on-campus counseling services. Every corner highlights the school’s commitment to holistic student development beyond academics. The on-site counseling office, staffed with professional counselors, offers continuous emotional support — a standard offering among U.S. boarding schools, yet executed with exceptional care and attention at RAGS.

School Strengths: Data & Highlights

Throughout the tour and follow-up Q&A session, the school shared key institutional data that underscores its outstanding strengths:

  • Student Body: The Upper School has approximately 417 students, representing 50 countries and 16 U.S. states, with international students making up around 25% of the community. Flags from all 50 nations displayed across campus stand as a visible symbol of global inclusion.

  • Academic Offerings: 21 AP courses covering core disciplines. Students take seven classes daily, including 4–5 core courses (English, Math, Science, etc.) plus 2 electives in arts or athletics.

  • Student-Faculty Ratio: 1:8. Every 5–6 students are assigned a dedicated academic advisor. The school also features a full-time college counselor, Cheryl, with 18 years of seasoned admissions experience.

  • College Matriculation: 100% college acceptance rate, with graduates gaining admission to top-tier universities including Harvard, Princeton, Duke, Brown, and Emory.

  • Athletic Success: Roughly 30% of recent graduating student-athletes continue competing at the collegiate level, far exceeding the national average of 2%–3%.

International Week: Where Global Cultures Unite

At 3 p.m., Leo led our group to the school theater for the annual International Week cultural showcase. International students from over 50 nations took the stage in traditional attire, delivering vibrant song, dance, and cultural performances. Chinese cheongsams, Indian saris, Vietnamese áo dài, and Mexican traditional garments turned the stage into a global cultural gallery, with every costume carrying unique cultural stories.

Student representatives shared that the school’s vast international community is its most remarkable feature. Here, cross-cultural communication extends far beyond classroom discussions, woven seamlessly into daily interactions. One current student remarked, “I never imagined I could build friendships with peers from dozens of countries. Simply sharing meals and conversations every day broadens my perspective endlessly.”

The school offers rich weekend activities for all students, including off-campus trips to Walmart, local supermarkets, shopping centers, and movie theaters. On-campus options feature bonfire nights, film screenings, and athletic events. Day students may also invite boarding students for off-campus outings with parental approval, fostering genuine integration between residential and local attendees.

Soaring High: America’s Exclusive Circus Arts Program

Following the cultural performances, we enjoyed the grand finale: a special Circus Arts showcase. As RAGS’ most iconic signature program, it stands as one of the oldest and most prestigious high school circus arts curricula across the United States, with a history spanning over two decades. The program is led by Jay Clement, a veteran circus arts instructor with extensive professional performance and teaching experience in New Zealand.

During the post-show sharing session, a Mexican student spoke eloquently about her journey in Circus Arts. She recalled her initial nervousness and self-doubt, and the immense sense of pride after mastering her first advanced aerial silk routine. She credited this program with helping her find belonging overseas and redefining her physical and mental limits.

Her experience resonates with Lily, another current student who balances musical theater, circus performances, and competitive dance. Faculty members demonstrate great flexibility and support for student extracurricular passions. When rehearsals conflict with coursework, makeup sessions are provided and assignment deadlines are reasonably adjusted. This genuine respect for individual goals is what makes RAGS such a beloved community.

The annual Circus Arts public performance is the most anticipated local cultural event, drawing audiences from the entire regional community. Beyond technical skills, students build courage, mutual trust, and strong teamwork through this one-of-a-kind program.

Academics & Athletics: Excellence in Both

Rabun Gap delivers comprehensive athletic programs with year-round training seasons:

  • Fall: Soccer, Volleyball, Cross Country

  • Winter: Basketball, Wrestling, Swimming

  • Spring: Baseball, Tennis, Golf, Track & Field

A complete tiered team system spans middle school to upper school, ensuring participation opportunities for athletes of all skill levels.

Notably, the coaching team prioritizes securing collegiate athletic scholarships for students. Leveraging extensive national recruitment networks, coaches actively share game footage and student profiles with university programs to expand competitive opportunities. The 30% collegiate athlete matriculation rate strongly reflects the school’s professional coaching and long-term athletic investment.

David, a student from Spain, shared his inspiring story. Originally planning to study in the U.S. for only one year, he fell in love with the school’s soccer team and inclusive community, ultimately staying for four years. He has completed 13 AP courses, primarily in STEM fields, and plans to pursue higher education in the United States. He stated that academics and athletics complement, rather than conflict with, one another at RAGS.

Robust academic support is also firmly established. Mandatory daily Study Hall runs from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., monitored by specialized teachers for subject tutoring and makeup exams. Structured learning habit initiatives, such as the daily 9-minute focus training program, help students build effective time management skills.

Q&A in the Arts Building: In-Depth Discussion with School Leadership

After the performances, we gathered on the third floor of the Arts Building for an in-depth Q&A session with the admissions team and current students. Core topics are summarized below:

  1. Course Selection & Academic Planning

Students begin personalized course selection in 9th grade via the school’s online portal, finalized through one-on-one consultations with their dedicated advisor. With only 5–6 students per advisor, individualized guidance is guaranteed. The full-time college counselor supports students throughout course planning and university applications.

  1. International Student Support

Comprehensive resources are provided for English immersion and cultural adaptation, with dedicated staff addressing transitional challenges. Just as showcased during International Week, the school actively creates platforms to celebrate every culture, rather than merely embracing diversity passively.

  1. College Counseling & Matriculation

The 100% college acceptance rate is backed by a systematic counseling framework. Admissions advisors oversee academic planning and application essays, while athletic coaches connect directly with collegiate recruitment teams to create pathways for student-athletes.

  1. Boarding Life & Independent Growth

The school encourages students to take ownership of their learning and utilize campus resources independently. Boarding students enjoy a structured daily routine alongside ample personal freedom, including participation in campus events and approved weekend outings with day student peers, cultivating maturity and self-reliance.
