As one of Florida’s most competitive premier private boarding high schools, Montverde Academy (MVA) has long been a top choice for families worldwide. For the fourth stop of our 2026 GE Spring FAM Trip, our team was invited to explore this modern academic campus in depth. From middle school to upper school, rigorous classrooms to welcoming residential communities, we conducted on-site tours and in-depth discussions with the admissions team, faculty, and current students to bring parents first-hand, up-to-date insights.

Upon entering campus, familiar faces brought us great warmth. Dr. David Rath, Vice President and Director of Enrollment Management — a long-time partner who has attended numerous GE Roadshows and Convention events — personally welcomed our group. Senior administrators across admissions, academics, student life, and international student support joined the reception and briefing, allowing us to understand the school’s comprehensive operation system from multiple perspectives.

School Overview
Nestled in the charming town of Montverde and minutes from Orlando, Florida, MVA is a historic private boarding school with over a century of development. What began as a small boarding institution has evolved into a nationally renowned college-preparatory academy. The school currently enrolls approximately 1,100 students, including 800 in the Upper School, representing countries and regions across the globe, with China and Brazil as the largest international student groups.
Guided by the core philosophy of Knowledge · Character · Community, MVA cultivates global citizens with strong academic competence, integrity, and social responsibility. The school has achieved remarkable growth and strategic transformation under the leadership of Head of School John Hotman since 1999.

Middle School Division - Early Preparation for a Competitive Future
MVA’s Middle School serves students in Grades 7–8, offering a solid foundation for students entering the American boarding system. The curriculum covers English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and world language electives (Spanish or French), with select courses eligible for high school credit. Mathematics adopts the rigorous Singapore Math framework, focusing on logical reasoning and practical problem-solving skills.
With a smaller residential community, the middle school delivers highly personalized support, including live-in dorm parents, dedicated academic advisors, and supervised evening study sessions. The daily Advisory program helps students build solid learning and life routines. Students are encouraged to explore electives and club activities to discover personal interests and prepare for upper school challenges.

During our visit, we observed a strong inquiry-based learning culture, well-equipped science laboratories, and a focused, disciplined learning atmosphere across all middle school classrooms.
Upper School Division - Academic Excellence for Top University Admission
The Upper School (Grades 9–12) is MVA’s core division, offering three flexible academic pathways: Regular, Honors, and AP, fully supporting differentiated teaching and personalized course scheduling.
MVA’s Advanced Placement program achieves outstanding results:
Overall AP exam pass rate reached 88% in 2025
Roughly 80 students earned AP Scholar with Distinction, accounting for 10% of the upper school population
Total AP Scholars have grown from 52 two decades ago to 197 and continue rising year by year
Awarded the College Board AP Platinum School Certification for three consecutive years
These outstanding outcomes stem from long-term investment in curriculum development and faculty training. Many teachers serve as official AP Readers, ensuring course instruction aligns strictly with national exam standards.
MVA also provides a rich lineup of signature academic programs:
AP Capstone: A two-year research and thesis-based program
Dual Enrollment: College credit partnerships with four local universities
Distinguished Scholars: An elite honors track for high-achieving students
Nine Career-focused Academic Pathways: Biomedical Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Sports Industry and more, supplemented by guest lectures, field trips, and internship opportunities to clarify students’ long-term academic and career planning.

College Counseling & Matriculation - Structured Guidance with Proven Results
MVA’s college counseling team consists of four professional counselors and one coordinator. College planning begins in Grade 9, with personalized one-on-one advisors assigned to Grade 11 students for major selection, university research, and essay guidance.
The school hosts roughly 100 college admission representatives annually for on-campus recruitment sessions and direct student networking. On-site testing includes SAT, PSAT, and AP exams, with full ACT support available.
Graduation outcomes remain consistently strong, with 100% of seniors gaining admission to four-year universities. Popular destinations include the University of Florida, Florida State University, University of Miami, New York University, and Pennsylvania State University, alongside other prestigious national institutions.

Arts Program - Conservatory-Style Training & Top-Tier Achievements
MVA features a comprehensive arts division encompassing Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Film Production, and Digital Media. Three prestigious Conservatory Programs are offered in Music, Theater, and Dance. Students complete core academic courses in the morning and participate in over three hours of intensive professional training each afternoon.
The campus’s main 413-seat theater serves as the heart of all arts productions for year-round rehearsals and performances. This academic year alone, the arts department has staged six major productions and eight full theater shows, including three world premieres.
MVA’s theater program is one of only two schools statewide with Gold-Level IETEA (International Educational Theatre Association) certification. The dance program earned exceptional awards in its first year of competition. MVA arts graduates regularly pursue advanced studies and professional careers on Broadway and global artistic stages.

Athletics - Scientific Training & Elite Student-Athlete Development
MVA’s athletic program focuses on science-based training and long-term athletic growth, with year-round training schedules for major sports — including basketball, running from August through May. Middle School sports are organized by grade level, while the Upper School offers a selective Elite Academy track for high-level athletes. Flexible class scheduling allows student-athletes to balance rigorous academics and intensive training, achieving true dual excellence in sports and studies.

Boarding Life - Structured Routine & High-Level Campus Safety
Boarding life follows a highly structured, balanced daily schedule with fixed class hours, mandatory Study Hall, and consistent curfew policies:
Grades 7–11: Curfew at 22:30
Grade 12: Curfew at 23:00

Weekend activities are abundant and diverse, including theme park trips, sports events, lakeside recreation, shopping excursions, and community service projects, all registered through the campus Aura App. Live-in dorm parents provide round-the-clock after-school and overnight support.
Campus safety measures include 24-hour security patrols, dedicated traffic management, and full meal service. The Canvas learning platform shares real-time schedules and attendance records with parents for fully transparent communication. A strict mobile device policy restricts phone usage to designated areas, helping students maintain focus during study hours.
International Student Support - Comprehensive & Culturally Attentive Services
MVA delivers robust support for international students, including a structured ESL curriculum with six annual SLATE assessments, placement testing, and ongoing academic tutoring. Roommate assignments are carefully arranged to balance language immersion and cultural adaptation.

The school maintains regular communication with families via email, WeChat, and Zoom, with dedicated Chinese-speaking support to help international families adjust smoothly.
Campus Facilities & Surroundings
Campus facilities are fully equipped with a professional performing arts theater, two dedicated arts buildings, a comprehensive gymnasium, strength and conditioning centers, and a modern dining hall. The surrounding area offers convenient amenities and natural leisure spaces including a private lake.
Dedicated pedestrian walkways and on-site traffic management ensure daily safety, supported by a mature, reliable 24-hour security system.

Dining Room
Our visit concluded at the campus dining hall. Students enjoyed balanced, nutritious meals in an orderly, relaxed community atmosphere with diverse menu options to accommodate global dietary preferences, marking a perfect ending to our in-depth tour.

As a world-class boarding school excelling in academics, arts, athletics, and international student services, Montverde Academy demonstrates outstanding strength in curriculum design, college counseling, residential life, and campus safety. For families seeking premium American boarding education with balanced all-round development, MVA stands out as a high-value, top-tier choice.
