Leaving the previous campus, our team of senior education consultants from Asia, Central & South America, and Europe headed south to the third stop of the 2026 GE Spring FAM Trip: Darlington School in Rome, Georgia. We immersed ourselves in exploring this century-old prestigious school’s campus scenery, educational philosophy and student life, uncovering the secrets behind its global popularity among students.

A Century of Heritage & A Forward-Thinking Educational Vision
Founded in 1905, Darlington School has stayed true to its founding mission for over a century. It delivers elite holistic education that balances academic advancement and character building, offering high-quality growth opportunities at a reasonable cost.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by pleasant spring scenery: bright sunshine, fresh air and a charming surrounding landscape. School President Brent Bell and his team welcomed our group in person. With 12 years of service at Darlington and prior experience at Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, President Bell deeply values the unique rhythm of boarding education and tight-knit campus community. He delivered a warm welcome speech and shared the school’s educational philosophy and future development plans, reflecting sincere care for every student.

At Home on the Hill, the school unveiled its ambitious future blueprint: a brand-new upper school academic building is under development, featuring modern classrooms, an upgraded dining hall and multi-purpose activity spaces. This project will elevate campus facilities, strengthen community connection and create an enhanced learning environment.
In addition, the school’s $75 million capital campaign has reached nearly 80% completion. Over $20 million of the funds are dedicated to financial aid programs, allowing outstanding students from all financial backgrounds to access Darlington’s premium resources and embracing equity and diversity.
The school kindly shared our detailed visit schedule in advance. Now, let’s take a full tour of Darlington School.

A Caring Community Culture | Supporting All-Round Student Growth

Stepping onto campus, we immediately felt as if we had entered an exquisite large park. Manicured lawns, lush trees and well-maintained buildings create a clean, cozy atmosphere. A serene lake on campus became a highlight of our visit, with swans gliding peacefully on the water. Our team paused to take photos, enjoying the relaxing scenery.

School administrators and faculty extended a warm welcome, and thoughtfully arranged sharing sessions by current Asian and European students. Their diverse cultural perspectives offered authentic insight into boarding life. Darlington enrolls students in Grades 9–12 from more than 20 countries including South Korea, China and Vietnam. Students actively participate in sports, politics, mathematics and various clubs. Many siblings study together here, fostering a strong family-style campus culture.

Students repeatedly mentioned that the school’s closest community bond leaves the deepest impression. Everyone knows their peers and builds lifelong friendships. Passionate teachers provide in-class instruction, while offering ongoing support during office hours for academics, club activities and personal projects. The unique house system, led by six house deans, delivers personalized guidance in academics, social adaptation and mental health, protecting students’ holistic growth.

To ease new students’ transition, Darlington offers a comprehensive orientation program. Dorm supervisors and orientation teams assist with move-in and campus adaptation. Shuttle buses provide round-trip transportation to major airports during school breaks to ensure travel safety. Tailored tiered academic courses accommodate different education backgrounds. Most Asian students qualify for advanced math tracks with flexible course adjustment options. Teachers prioritize hands-on, inquiry-based learning instead of rote memorization, cultivating independent critical thinking skills.
A full-service health center operates on campus. School nurses coordinate local hospital visits for sick students, with dorm parents accompanying medical appointments. Partnered insurance fully covers medical expenses, easing concerns for both students and families.

Weekends are rich and fulfilling: regular shuttles run to Walmart and local shopping centers, and students may visit friends off-campus with approval. On-campus activities include karaoke nights, teacher-hosted hot dog stands and fully equipped fitness centers, balancing relaxation and enrichment.

Elite Athletic Programs | Balancing Academics & Sports

Guided by faculty, we visited nearby high-end golf and tennis clubs with professional, world-class facilities for Darlington’s student-athletes. As a top athletic school in Georgia, Darlington’s tennis and golf programs stand as signature strengths, perfectly integrating competitive sports with rigorous academics.

Tennis Program

The campus features professional clay and hard courts situated on high ground with panoramic views. Students complete two hours of systematic training daily after school, and compete in tournaments on weekends. Coaches design personalized training plans for beginners and advanced players alike, rejecting one-size-fits-all training. Varsity team members also assist in training, enabling high-level practical skill development.
Golf Program

The golf team welcomes athletes of all ages and skill levels, from seasoned competitors to complete beginners. Professional coaches and superior course facilities support every student in challenging their limits through sports.
The school carefully schedules training and class times to minimize conflicts, helping students achieve balanced excellence in athletics and academics, and cultivating well-rounded talents.
Gym
The spacious on-campus gym displays a rich collection of honor trophies, showcasing Darlington’s long-standing athletic legacy. A dedicated indoor passage connects academic and residential buildings directly to sports facilities for convenient access. A fully equipped recovery and training room further demonstrates the school’s investment in athletic development. Additional campus facilities include an indoor swimming pool, basketball courts, fitness center, football alumni wall, wrestling hall of fame and sports rehabilitation rooms.

Diverse Arts Education | Inspiring Creativity & Artistic Talent

Beyond outstanding athletics, Darlington’s arts division thrives across three core branches: performing arts, visual arts and communication arts, providing unlimited creative platforms for students.

Performing arts encompasses band, orchestra, choir and theater with tiered progressive courses for all skill levels. Students may select graded choir and instrumental programs from beginner to advanced. Seasonal performances including fall plays and winter musicals are held annually. Students regularly participate in regional art festivals and competitions, earning widespread recognition and awards.

Fully equipped piano classrooms and practice rooms are available on campus. Beginner piano lessons and one-on-one private music tutoring (online & in-person) are offered at an affordable rate of only $720 for 12 sessions, approximately $50 per hour — highly cost-effective compared with peer boarding schools. The program also supports niche instrumental learning to fulfill diverse artistic pursuits.

Centered on storytelling, communication arts oversees the school newspaper The Darlingtonian and yearbook production. Underclassmen learn foundational skills, while upperclassmen serve as editors. The curriculum integrates video production and hands-on media projects to enhance writing and digital literacy. Dedicated art counselors offer recommendation letter support and portfolio guidance for students applying to art-focused universities.
Thoughtful Campus Services & Comprehensive Support
We continued our tour with on-campus dormitories. The boys’ dorms are neat, orderly and welcoming, with a quiet library on the first floor ideal for individual study. A Canadian student shared his experience winning a state basketball championship, further proving the school’s athletic competitiveness. The girls’ dorms are bright, well-lit and well-organized with a warm, comfortable residential atmosphere.

From academics to daily life, Darlington’s comprehensive support system creates a safe, comforting living environment. Full-campus surveillance ensures campus safety. The school emphasizes social-emotional learning to prepare students for college and future life. Ongoing professional development opportunities empower teachers to strengthen academic instruction and college counseling services.
We enjoyed fresh, diverse meals in the campus dining hall, experiencing the relaxed, inclusive daily vibe of the Darlington community firsthand.

Whether in curriculum design, event planning, daily care or medical support, the school always puts students first. Thoughtful, detailed services help international students feel at home far from their families and give parents complete peace of mind.
