2026 GE Fall FAM Trip Stop 4: NY-EFA School Visit Recap: Explore a Real American High School Campus!
Visit Date: September 15, 2026, 14:00–19:30
Venue: EFA School, Thornwood, New York, USA
With countless American boarding high schools out there, what exactly makes EFA New York stand out? This time, we set off to find the answer. We spent an entire afternoon, followed by dinner on-site, touring the campus: from visitor check-in at the front gate to student dorms; from libraries and classrooms to cheers ringing out beside the volleyball court. We heard candid testimonials from current students and shared dinner with faculty members.
Below is what we saw, what we learned, and the details we believe every family should know.
01 - Itinerary Overview: Immersive Open House
The school prepared a detailed schedule for all visiting educators. Instead of a superficial, ceremonial tour, our FAM Trip group was split into two teams, each led by school administrators for an in-depth look at academic and residential life.

(Principal Lisa could not attend due to her daughter’s wedding and sent her regards to our group via colleagues.)
Nearly all core operational faculty members were on hand to host us, reflecting the school’s sincere and warm hospitality.

02 - School Snapshot: A Highly International Community

“Class sizes are small, and teachers know every student by name.”
The school emphasized that its modest scale is not a limitation, but a deliberate advantage it preserves.

03 - First Impression: Safety Built Into Every Detail
Before entering the campus, our roster was submitted in advance. We were issued physical visitor badges after passing the gate — this is not a special arrangement for our visit, but standard daily protocol.

● Vehicle Access Control: Barriers are set at campus entrances, and all incoming and outgoing vehicles are subject to inspection.
● On-site Security: Near the soccer field, we noticed a police car stationed permanently with security personnel on duty inside, to prevent unauthorized outsiders from entering campus.
● Police Partnership: The school is only about a 5-minute drive from the local police station. Local officers conduct annual campus walkthroughs and even use the campus for training during the winter break when the school is closed. In an emergency, officers are fully familiar with the campus layout and can respond rapidly.
● Dorm Access Control: Keycard entry, with CCTV monitoring overnight.
● Digital Tracking: Student movement is managed via the Orah system; students must apply for a pass to leave campus.
To sum up our impression: Unauthorized visitors can barely gain free access to the campus. Meanwhile, the campus itself is spacious enough to host all kinds of activities and athletic training on-site. Safety and freedom coexist harmoniously here.
04 - Campus Tour: Well-Planned, Efficient Layout
Theater | Gathering Place for Major Events
On the first day of school, administrators meet parents and students in the theater to help families get acquainted with the leadership team. It also hosts all-school assemblies, Culture Day and Lunar New Year celebrations. The school shared that Lunar New Year is one of the most enthusiastically attended student events.

Library | A Space for Independent Study
Librarian Vivian has 24 years of experience in international education and also serves as a residential dorm parent. Her role extends far beyond checking books in and out; she focuses on college transition and building students’ research skills.
The library features group discussion rooms. During evening study hall, the space is zoned: designated areas for group discussion and quiet nooks for individual focus. There is also a puzzle and casual reading lounge.

Dining Hall | Catering to Diverse Tastes
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served Monday through Friday. Brunch and dinner are available on weekends. Students may order takeout food with advance reservations within set time windows.
Menus rotate regularly and incorporate global cultural dishes, including Vietnamese pho, assorted international soups and regional specialties. Indoor and outdoor seating areas are both available.
Students can receive packages normally, with Amazon being their most popular shopping platform. Parcels are delivered and collected on campus daily.

Dorms | International Roommate Placement
Three-story dormitory building: The first floor mainly houses Grades 9–10 students; Grades 11–12 live on the second and third floors.
Each wing of the dorm has a communal lounge furnished with cozy sofas. Boys and girls may socialize in the lounge during daytime hours. Everyone returns to their rooms or the library for supervised evening study, and must be back in their assigned dorm rooms after lights out at 22:30.

● Standard rooms are triple-occupancy with private bathrooms and showers and central air conditioning. Double rooms and single rooms are premium upgrades available upon separate family application.

Why does the school stick to triple rooms? Faculty explained that roommates are intentionally paired across different nationalities and native languages. This setup lets first-time overseas students immerse fully in boarding life, encouraging them to communicate in English and even pick up a third language from their roommates.
One Thai student lived with a Norwegian roommate for three years and graduated fluent in Thai, Spanish, English and Norwegian.
Free periods follow structured supervision: attendance is taken for library study sessions to ensure accountability and safety. Faculty families, including their children and pets, live on campus. Students can reach teachers for help after class at any time. Extra evening review sessions are held by teachers before AP/IB exams.
Health Center | Holistic Physical & Mental Support
A health center coordinator manages intake and triage. A registered nurse handles routine medical care and helps families coordinate appointments with local specialists.
A licensed mental health counselor is on staff, and telehealth services are also accessible.
If students already work with an off-campus therapist from their home country, they may continue that therapeutic relationship, with private meeting space provided by the school. Students needing rest or observation can stay in the health center with dedicated supervision.

Academic Building | Clearly Zoned Subject Wings
One side of the academic building holds science and art classrooms. We visited a forensic science classroom set up as a mock crime scene. The other side houses math, humanities, language and literature classrooms.

A pleasant surprise is the Whisper Room beside the student lounge: an enclosed soundproof booth equipped with keyboards and recording gear. Music students use it to compose, record tracks and refine their college application portfolios — a fantastic resource for aspiring musicians.

Campus Grounds | Woodland Trail
The campus is large and scenic. A woodland trail lined with trees and a small stream connects the academic buildings to the soccer fields. It feels like a secluded nature path, yet it is just a regular shortcut for students. The sprawling campus even accommodates cross-country training entirely on-site, no off-campus travel required.

05 - Academics & College Counseling: Long-Term Planning Starting in Grade 9
Schedule Structure
Mondays feature standard 40-minute class periods. Tuesday through Friday run on an 80-minute block schedule, mirroring university-style learning.
Classes dismiss at 15:45. On Wednesdays and Fridays, Advisory & Club Time runs from 15:05 to 15:45, followed by athletics until 18:00.

Course Offerings
The school offers both IB and AP curricula, and students can pursue a mixed IB/AP pathway. Among the students we met, some are full IB candidates while others combine IB and AP courses. ESL/EAL English support is available for students with limited English proficiency.

UAC (University & Academic Counseling)
Counselor Kristen Carter begins working with students from Grade 9 to design course sequences that strengthen college applications.
College admissions officers visit campus year-round — including officers who will later review student applications. Two all-school college fairs are hosted annually, each drawing 20–30 post-secondary institutions.
End-to-end support is provided: counselors help polish personal statements, run college boot camps and track application milestones. EFA is an official SAT test site, so students can take the SAT on campus.
Athletic recruitment support: The Athletic Director helps talented student-athletes connect with university coaches. Last year, several students secured elite college offers through athletic recruitment.

06 - Student Panel: Current Students Share Their Real Experiences
Four current students joined our panel, representing Vietnam, Macao (China), Spain and Mexico. They shared authentic insights into academics and residential life at EFA.
Why Did You Choose EFA School?
Many found EFA via education consultants. One student’s older sister previously attended EFA. Some families discovered EFA when searching online for “international boarding school USA + IB”, as EFA appeared at the top of search results.
One student’s parents originally wanted him to attend high school in the UK, but he advocated for studying in the US for three months. He ultimately chose EFA, drawn by its thoughtful support for international students.
Another student transferred to the New York campus from EFA’s Pasadena, California location to pursue the full IB Diploma Programme.
Theme 1: Sense of Community & Belonging
“No one gets left behind; everyone finds friends.”
Students repeatedly noted that teachers live on campus like family and are always available for help. One student with OCD/ADHD shared that the school’s mental health program fully accepts him and respects his autonomy — he decides whether to participate in counseling, with gentle, tailored support if he chooses to engage. All students agreed that making friends comes easily here. The campus culture feels familial, with strong, supportive community bonds.
Theme 2: Dramatic English Growth
A student from Macao shared that his English was very weak upon enrollment, roughly equivalent to an IELTS 4.5. During our panel, he spoke fluently, logically and articulately, impressing all visiting educators. He credited his progress to individualized teacher attention and the ESS/EAL program. He once disliked English, but now feels confident in his abilities.
Theme 3: Personal Growth Seen by Families
Nearly every student highlighted growing independence and maturity: managing laundry, organizing their own study and daily routines. This hands-on boarding experience prepares them well for college life.
One student used to hate math, but EFA’s teaching methods gradually changed his attitude, and he now earns strong math grades.
A student from Mexico said her biggest transformation is learning to make her own decisions — to “Explore myself” and understand her true priorities.
Theme 4: Differences From Traditional Classrooms
Students described EFA’s interactive class dynamic: teachers act more like collaborators than lecturers, and knowledge is co-constructed rather than passively delivered. Teachers voluntarily open classrooms for two hours after study hall for extra help and make-up assessments.
AI Policy at EFA
Students may use tools such as ChatGPT to brainstorm ideas and gather inspiration, but submitting AI-generated work as their own counts as academic dishonesty. Phones must be turned in during exams, and pocket checks are conducted. The policy strikes a balanced approach: neither banning AI outright nor allowing unregulated use.
College Destinations
Students pursue diverse application plans. Some apply to US universities, while others target the UK, Europe, or Asian destinations including Hong Kong and Japan. Multi-country application portfolios are common at EFA, and the UAC team guides students through the whole process — a natural advantage brought by the school’s globally diverse student body.
07 - Athletics: Comprehensive Indoor & Outdoor Facilities
Past the woodland trail and stream from the academic buildings lie outdoor athletic fields with wide-open green space for soccer, cross-country and more. We also toured the Falcon Athletic Center indoor gymnasium while a girls’ volleyball home game was underway.

Seasonal Sports
Fall: Soccer, Volleyball, Cross Country
Winter: Boys’ Basketball, Girls’ Basketball, Cheerleading
Spring: Boys’ & Girls’ Tennis plus other club sports, all offered at varsity level.
Facilities: Falcon Athletic Center plus a regulation artificial turf field.
Game schedule on our visit day: Girls’ Volleyball home match; Girls’ Soccer away game against Masters School, another private boarding school around a 20-minute drive away; Boys’ Soccer match the following day.

Customized Athletic Support: For students committed to external competitions (one student plays club volleyball off-campus; another trains in boxing), the school arranges Uber transport and monitors travel safety. Twice-weekly off-campus league training opportunities are available for students each winter.
Transportation: Four school shuttles run routes to train stations and for away athletic events.

08 - Weekends & Breaks: Structured Freedom
Privileges for off-campus outings expand with grade level, but all leave requests require parental authorization.

Faculty organize supervised weekend activities. The Saturday just before our visit saw 99 students head out with approved passes: Grades 9–11 attended a Yankees baseball game. On rainy Sundays, on-campus activities such as tie-dye and cycling are arranged.
Students have their own beloved tradition: heading to grocery stores together and returning to dorms to cook hot pot and share meals. Day students are welcome to join boarding student activities, may stay until 22:00 for evening study hall, and can even stay overnight for prom. Day and boarding students integrate seamlessly with little division between groups.
Holidays & Immersive Trips
Thanksgiving: 5-day break. Students may stay on campus, return home or host visiting family.
Winter Break: Campus closes roughly December 14 to January 3; all students must leave campus.
Spring Break: Students return home or travel with family (some invite friends to stay with their families in Mexico).
Fall Immersion Trips: Each grade travels to different East Coast cities including Philadelphia, Boston and Washington DC. This year’s Grade 12 group will stay in log cabins at a traditional American summer camp. Trips are revised annually based on student feedback. For example, the senior trip is designed to reserve uninterrupted time for college essay writing.
09 - For Families & Partners: Authentic Takeaways
1. A genuine international boarding community: 80% boarding / 20% day student ratio, with mixed global cohorts and no single nationality cluster.
2. Benefits of small scale: Around 230 total students, small class sizes, every child is seen, known and supported.
3. Dual IB + AP curriculum with EAL support: Flexible pathways for college, clear progression for students starting with lower English proficiency.
4. UAC counseling starting in Grade 9: Four-year wrap-around support covering course selection, essay refinement, college fairs, admissions officer visits and on-site SAT testing.
5. Robust safety framework: Orah tracking, keycard dorm access, tiered outing permissions with parental approval, plus on-site security and annual police familiarization drills.
6. Residential faculty: Evening help and accessible office hours. Faculty families and campus pets nurture a true home-like atmosphere.
7. Spacious, scenic campus: Woodland trails, regulation sports fields, on-site cross-country training. Sports and nature are part of daily life.
8. Well-rounded mental health support: Licensed counselors, telehealth access, and respect for students’ existing therapeutic relationships and personal autonomy.

At 17:30 in the evening, we joined school leadership for dinner at a local restaurant, where the school thoughtfully prepared a custom welcome cake for our FAM Trip team. During dinner, they shared their proprietary AI learning platform for students and teachers — Efekta AI Tutor. Its core functions include:
AI Speaking Practice: Role-play and conversational scenarios for English practice
Grammar & Vocabulary Coaching: Error explanations and targeted exercises
Writing Feedback: Review and revision support for English compositions
Adaptive Learning: Content adjusted to each student’s level and pace
Instant Feedback: Learning recommendations covering listening, speaking, reading and writing

As we said our goodbyes that evening, we had our answer to the question we brought at the start. What makes EFA Thornwood School special is not a single standout facility or statistic. It is its one-of-a-kind international community and deeply supportive culture, where every student is seen, heard and empowered to grow.
